The Re-education of Historic Tax Breaks

Texas is ranked in the bottom 15 percent in education in the country. This is a sad fact that must be addressed for the future of the State and her citizens. The Re-education of Historic Tax Breaks by Richard Whittaker tells us about the dual spending on homes that claim to have historic value, but in many cases do nothing to improve the culture or education of our city. The tax breaks are actually taking away tax money from our schools. Since it is both the City of Austin and the Austin Independent School District that foots the bill in the form of tax breaks for the people that claim their property is of historic importance it is, to me, imperative that there is both a cultural and educational pay off.
